Residents in an indie suburb have been left fuming over plans to develop a 24-hour McDonalds restaurant alongside coffee shops and breweries.
The fast food giant submitted a pre-development application in January for the site around the corner from the main retail strip and popular brewery Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre.
A two-storey restaurant with a 24-hour drive-through service with 12 parking spaces is proposed.
Mixed reactions have emerged in the comments section of the Inner West City Council’s planning alert portal where locals can share their thoughts on developments.
“As a longtime Marrickville resident I strongly object to this proposal, because it is crass, trashy, nauseating and, worst of all, boring,” local Caroline said.
“It would be mortifying to bring down the culinary tone with gross, weird, spongy junk.”
“Marrickville [is] really going down the drain,” Robynne Hayward said.
“We do not need major brands to diminish the incredibly unique character of Marrickville – so please do not permit McDonalds to proceed,” Karen Soo said.
Among locals major concerns is traffic congestion in an already busy precinct, the threat of waste build up in the streets and a desire for more healthy alternatives.
The fast food chain opened its first store in Marrickville in 1984 but closed about 15 years ago only to be replaced with Portuguese chicken chain Oporto.
Members of community facebook groups including the 11,000 followers of We Love Marrickville also jumped in on the conversation with many excited about the chain’s revival.
“Awesome. Not everyone in the inner west is anti maccas,” one local wrote.
“We have enough coffee shops and vegan cafes.. bring it on Ronald. “
“Bad luck. If the yuppies don‘t like it they can suck it up & go elsewhere,” a second resident said.
The inner-west suburb is already home to a McDonalds store inside the Metro shopping centre, a 5-minute drive from the proposed site.
